Pileated Woodpecker

Look what we found yesterday while hiking in the Cape Arago area!

Pileated Woodpecker (male)
Searching for a tasty morsel.

Tidbit: The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest North American woodpecker (Ivory-bill being considered near extinct).

  1. Great photograph and video. A pileated woodpecker put huge holes in our neighbours hot tub this winter looking for treats 🤣

    1. Oh my. A farm I used to exercise horses on had a renegade woodpecker who loved the metal pipe outside the owner’s bedroom window. One day in a fit of rage, so the story goes, she ripped of her red nightgown and hung it on the pipe outside the window. The woodpecker never came back and when last I knew, the nightgown, now faded to pink, was still hanging there.
